Welcome to our Family Housing community!
As you prepare for your move to campus, we know there is a lot of planning and packing!
This page has been developed to make your move as smooth as possible. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you prepare for your move...
1. Review Your Tenancy Documents
- Your Lease and an N11 Form (Agreement to End Tenancy) are now avaiable electroncially for your signature and your records. To read, download or sign your Lease, go to the Housing Portal and select your Family Housing Application.
- Please review and sign your Lease document as soon as possible after you accept your offer and let us know if you have any questions. Our Lease is the Ontario Standardized Lease, and contains an Appendix with conditions specific to the University of Guelph.
- You must sign your Lease before you receive keys.
- An N11 Agreement to End Tenancy Form is also included with your Tenancy documents. This notice form is dated one year from the start of your lease with us. Signing your N11Form DOES NOT mean that you must move out on this date. We will automatically invite you to RENEW your lease annually if you continue to meet the terms and conditions of your tenancy, such as continued affiliation with the University of Guelph and no outstanding rental arrears.
2. Set up Your Move-in Appointment
- To set up a time to receive your keys, contact us at famrent@uoguelph.ca for an appointment time. Our office is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 am - 4:30 pm (closed 12 noon - 1:00 pm for lunch).
3. Arrange for an Internet Service Provider
- There are a variety of local internet service providers (Rogers, Bell, TekSavvy, and others). It's your choice which provider you choose, based on your own requirements. You can arrange for an installation service time in advance, in order to set up an appointment for the day of your move if needed. We cannot provide access to your unit prior to your moving day.
4. Arrange for Tenant Insurance
- Tenant Insurance protects your personal valuables and liability. Read more about Tenant Insurance.
- Tenant insurance is available through any insurance provider. Most people bundle their tenant insurance with car insurance, if applicable.
- Your insurance provider may have questions about our buildings. You can download and send them Insurer Information about Family Housing

6. Picking up Your Keys
- At your scheduled appointment time, please come to Unit # 132 at 78 College Avenue to receive your keys.
- Masks or face coverings are required to enter the Family Housing Rentals office.
- Please bring photo ID .
7. Vehicle Parking Permit
- All vehicles parked in Family Housing parking lots must have a Family Housing Parking Permit. One space is included at no cost for all rentals. Each additional space is $25 per month.
- To obtain a parking permit, please email us your Parking Permit Application form in advance, or download and print and bring to your Move-in Appointment time.
8. Move In!
- This is the exciting part - it's time to move in!
- After you receive your keys, you can begin moving in to your unit anytime
- If you have a large moving truck or over-sized vehcile, you can park temporarily in our parking lots during your move. Larger moving trucks (that take up more than one parking space) must not remain overnight.
- You can park as close as possible on the roadway while activelly unloading your furnishings, provided that you DO NOT PARK in a Fire or Emergency lane, or on a landscaped area, or block other vehicles in parking or roadway areas.
- If you are parked on the roadway, someone must remain with the vehicle at all times, and your vehicle must be moved after your move in complete.
- Please be careful of young children playing during your move.
9. Finding Your Unit
10. Complete Your Move-in Inspection Form
- Immediately after you move in to your new unit, we want you to complete a Move-Inspection Form right away, within 5 business days.
- This form allows you to let us know if there are any immediate deficiencies (ie. lights not working, dripping taps, etc.) that require a work order.
- This form is also your opportunity to record any marks, scratches or anything else that you notice that you think we should be aware of. This form is used to compare the condition of your unit when you move-out, in the event that there are any damages. For this reason, please be thorough and detailed about any issues that you observe in your move-in inspection.
Now what?
- You will be contacted by one of our Community Life Facilitators (CLF) for an online Orientation Visit. Our CLFs are part of our Residence Life Team and they are here to help answer your questions about community life and resources. Your online orientation will cover basics like "how do I adjust the thermostat?" and "where do I put my garbage?" and "what if I lock myself out?" If you have any other questions, you can ask your CLF during your orientation visit.
- Unpack and enjoy your new home...
