Residence Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Where is Gordon Hall exactly?

A:  Gordon Hall is located at 785 Gordon Street, which is located a short 7-10 minute walk from the main campus and South Residence at 785 Gordon Street.  The name Gordon Hall is based on its location on Gordon Street. Gordon Street was named by city founder/settler John Galt, who chose the name to honour Margaret Gordon, the first woman settler who had ventured "this far into the wilderness.”

Q:  I need to buy sheets - what size should I buy?

A:  All rooms have queen-size beds, with some exceptions, which have twin-sized beds. See floor plan.

Q:  Is there a mini-fridge?

A:  Yes, all rooms have one mini-fridge.  You are also welcome to bring your own mini-fridge if desired.

Q:  Is Gordon Hall air-conditioned?  Do the windows open?

A:  Yes, Gordon Hall is air-conditioned.  Windows are non-operable but there is an air exchanger in each room.

Q:  Do I need a Meal Plan?  How will I access healthy meals?

A:  Yes, meal plans are required as there are no full kitchen facilities. Gordon Hall features a small cafe called Cafe 785 in the main lobby.  All campus dining halls are open to Gordon Hall residents.  The reusable take-out container program is ideal for having your meals on campus and/or taking food home to reheat at your convenience.  Gordon Hall will have microwaves available.  Most students are on campus each day for classes and can access any dining hall for healthy meals, for both eat-in and take-out.  Students may use any of our Hospitality locations on-campus and can spend flex dollars at numerous restaurants in the Harvard Estates Plaza across the street, including Osmow's, Ray's Chinese, Popeye's, and BarBurrito.

Q:  Is there WiFi in the rooms?

A:  Yes, all rooms will have unlimited WiFi. If you have a WiFi printer, you will need to bring a printer cable, as you will not be able to set up your own private network using a router.

Q:  Do I have to clean my own ensuite washroom?  Are supplies included?

A:  Ensuite washrooms and rooms are considered private space, and you are responsible for cleaning and supplies (i.e. soap). Toilet paper will be provided. Our on-site custodial staff will clean all shared spaces, hallways, study rooms, lobby, common areas, kitchenettes, etc.  A vacuum cleaner will be available for sign out at the service desk for student use.

Q:  What security measures are in place?

A:  The Front Door will be accessed through ID card access and all students will have room keys to their room space. We have live-in staff on site - an Assistant Residence Life Manager, 6 Residence Assistants, and a Cluster Leader.  The University Safe Walk program is available for Gordon Hall residents.  A 24 hour Residence Desk is located in the lobby entrance, and Residence Management Staff will be available on-call to respond to situations in the evenings and will be working with the Campus Safety Office and Guelph Police.

Q:  Where do I do laundry?

A:  Laundry services are included in your residence fees and are available within the building.

Q:  Is parking included?

A: University of Guelph Yellow parking pass must be purchased for use on campus as well as the Gordon Hall parking lot.  Gordon Hall residents can park overnight on site.

Q:  How was the residence rate set?

A:  All residence rates are set using a variety of factors, including but not limited to, room size, services, amenities, ensuite washroom, etc.  There are a wide variety of room layouts and sizes throughout our residence system, so we use a range of inputs. The Gordon Hall rate is the same as a North/South single room using these inputs.

Q:  How much storage will be available?

A:  All rooms have a closet and large dresser.  A dresser unit will be added, as well as a second desk and chair.  Rooms with a Queen bed do not have under bed storage. Twin bed rooms have additional under bed storage space.

Q:  Can I bring small appliances (i.e. toaster, kettle?)

A:  Access to a microwave will be available.  Small appliances with a heating element (ie. toaster) must be used in the ventilated kitchenette area for fire safety reason.  This is also a policy in all campus residences.  Fire safety systems are very sensitive to toast or steam and could set off an alarm.

Q:  Is there an elevator?

A:  There is no elevator.
