Application Questions

If this is your first time applying for residence, it can seem a bit complicated. It’s really not. Just follow these steps and don’t hesitate to contact us if you need any help.

A little background research

  • Read the Residence Contract carefully. We know it's pretty dry stuff, but you are entering into a legal agreement with the University, so you should understand the terms.
  • Have a look through our Residence Viewbook. You will find valuable information about each of our residence communities -- including our Academic Learning Clusters (ALCs), our Living Learning Centres (LLCs) and our Themed Living Communities (TLCs).

Making your choices

  • The residences on campus are located in three areas (South, North, and East); on your application you will be asked to rank the three areas in order of your preference. If you can, come visit us and take a campus tour to help you decide.
  • More detailed descriptions of each residence can be found in our Residence LookBook.
  • You will also be asked to indicate on your application which is more important to you: the room type (e.g., single, double, etc.) that you are assigned, or your residence building location.
  • Almost all of our first year residence accommodations require the purchase of a meal plan as a part of the contract. Check out the Hospitality Services information to learn about the different options.

Application Information 

  • You will be asked to provide the name, address and phone number of someone for us to contact in the event of an emergency. If you are under 18 years of age, this MUST be your parent or legal guardian. If you are over 18, it can be anyone you prefer.
  • You will be asked to provide us with your personal mobile phone number.  Student Housing Services collects this information in order to be able to communicate with you during an emergency. We won’t share the number with anyone else.
  • We’ll also be asking you about some factors that help us match you with potential roommates – such as whether you are neat or messy, whether or not you smoke, etc.
  • Anything else we should know to help us find the right spot for you?  For example, if you have a disability, medical condition, dietary need and/or requirements related to: lifestyle, culture, gender or religious needs, make sure you add that information to the application. Sometimes documentation will be required. We’ll let you know if that’s the case.

There you go! Just make sure you complete the application and send in your deposit before June 1st.

What about roommates?

Good news – you don’t have to worry about the roommate issue until AFTER you submit the application on June 1st.

Keep in mind:

  • only students who met the application and deposit deadline will be able to add specific roommate names to their application
  • both applicants must ask for each other in order for the request to be considered valid

If you are in a triple or quad room, you can request sharing with two or three other people – but again, you will all need to request each other.

Do I have to request a roommate?

No. If you’ve requested a single room, we’ll do our best to get you one but we can’t guarantee it. For other rooms, we assign roommates using a program that takes into account the factors we’ve asked about on the application (smoking, study location, gender, etc.).

You would only request a roommate if you have a specific person in mind who also wants to share a room with you.

What things should I think about when requesting a roommate? 

You and your potential roommate might have been friends for years, but that’s not quite the same as sharing a room. Take some time to talk over these issues so they don’t come back and bite you later:

  • Cleanliness/tidiness of the room
  • Study times in the room
  • Use of stereo/TV, telephone, computer and/or refrigerator
  • What personal belongings can be (are not to be) shared?
  • What if one of you stays out at night?
  • Are overnight guests in the room ok? How often? How much advance warning is necessary?
  • How will you resolve disagreements?

Okay, we’ve talked it over and we still want to be roommates. What do we do now?

Picture of two female students in a residence room.The Roommate Request selection process starts June 6, 2017 at 12 noon and will close on June 19, 2017. Once you get your central login (also referred to as your GryphMail login) you can start.   If you have not yet received your central login and password in the mail, don't worry, it is on its way.  The Roommate Selection option is open until June 19 at midnight.

Here’s what to do:

Go to the myHousing site:

http://www.housing.uoguelph.ca/myhousing

You will be forwarded to the U of Guelph single sign-on screen. Use your central login user name and password.

The first screen contains a summary of your activity. Your name will appear with a list of important messages about your residence status such as 'application & deposit received'.  On the right side of the screen, there is a navigation menu.

To select roommates, click on 'Roommate Selection'.

There are two help files to assist you at the top.

  • There is a list of text boxes to search for roommates.
  • In the 'Last name' text box, type the last name of your preferred roommate.
  • Click on the button below it that says 'Request Student as Roommate.'
  • On the next screen you will be presented with a list of roommates that have the last name that you typed.  Select the correct name and then click 'Continue.'
  • If the correct name does not appear, click cancel and check the spelling before continuing.
  • Once you select someone and click 'Continue', you will see a new screen that indicates the requested roommate and his or her status. If this student has not selected you yet, the status will indicate 'Does Not Match'.
  • You can remind them to select you by clicking on the remind button beside the status box. Or contact your friend directly and remind them to complete the roommate request form.

You can also remove someone from your preferences if you wish.

You can also add another roommate below the roommate request table using the same process as above.

As your requested roommate(s) select you, their status will change to 'Matches'.

As always, don't forget to logout of myHousing (last item on the navigation list).

I don’t have a roommate request, but I’m worried about living with a stranger.

Many life-long friendships have started between residence roommates. Sharing a room really can be a positive experience, but it can also require some work.

Here are some tips to help you both get along:

  • Keep an open mind. Your roommate will do some things differently than you do, but that doesn’t mean they are wrong.
  • Try to address problems or issues as soon as they come up.
  • Be truthful about your needs. Let your roommate know if you aren’t up to conversation before you have your coffee or breakfast, or if you can only study in complete silence. Then the two of you can find solutions.
  • Don't make assumptions. When in doubt, ask.
  • Remember that your roommate is nervous, too. You might even be doing some things she finds annoying.
  • Talk to each other!
  • Ask for help from your Residence Assistant if you need it. The RAs can help mediate situations and suggest possible alternatives.
